Kingussie

KIngussie is about halfway between Newtonmore to the south west and Kincraig to the north. This robust little town sits proudly on the banks of the River Spey and has many shops, hotels and other accommodation providers as well as Restaurants and pubs.

To the east of the town is the impressive ruins of Ruthven Barracks which were build to house and protect government troops after the Jacobite rebellion in the early 18th Century (1715).

Historic Scotland are now the caretakers of the ruin. There is no charge to visit this place of historical interest. The roof is still missing after the second uprising in 1746 when the Jacobites managed to sack the barracks despite its seemingly  formidable defences.

KIngussie has an abundance of walks, hill walks and other outdoor things to do, or if you want something a little different then a few miles to the north you will find the Highland Wildlife park with Polar Bears and Tigers and much much more.
