The north of the Cairngorms
National Park is dominated by the course of the River Spey which
carries on from Aviemore in the West Park through Boat of Garten
and onto Granton on Spey. A major tributary of the Spey is
the river Carr which also dominates the north.
This
is very much the start of the Spey Whisky region with
distilleries and their depositories dotting some of the
landscape. The river Spey is important to those distilleries
as it is to tourism and of course to anglers who come from
all over the world to fish for the mighty salmon.
The
ares has lots to do both organised and also by way of
reserves and the great outdoors.

The RSPB
has a lot of interest in the surrounding area as Boat of Garten
saw the return of the Osprey to the UK over 50 years ago. There
are now numerous breading pairs throughout much of central and
western Scotland.
