Tomintoul is the highest
village in the Cairngorms National Park lying at 350 metres
above sea level at its highest part (Dalwhinnie is at a height
or around 340 metres). However it is probably the Tomintoul
whisky which makes the village well known.
This is indeed situated in
Whisky Country, as Tomintoul is in the Crown Estate of Glenlivet.
The Tomintoul distillery
situated near the town can be visited but by appointment only.
Nearby in the Lecht Pass
lies the skiing are of the Lecht which has become popular all
year round. There are literally hundreds of trails and bike
paths in this general area.

Partly to do with the
elevation of this area and partly attributed to the northern
"softness" of the scenery, this part of the National Park has a
very different feel to it. The glens around Tomintoul do provide
splendid scenery as commented on by Quenn Victoria when she
visited the area.
