Glenshee, Cairngorm Park, East

The Spittal of Glenshee lies at the head of the glen of the same name and at the foot of Ben Gulabin and a few miles from the Glenshee Mountain Centre. It is also on the Cateran Trail, an excellent long distance path, however there are many short distance routes which start directly from Spittal of Glenshee.

If you really like the outdoors and walking then this area is perfect for you. This is also an excellent base for Munro baggers as there are numerous Munros easily accessible from here. See our Mountain pages for full descriptions.

Just up the road is the Glenshee Mountain Centre the main ski centre for the eastern Cairngorms.

There is an infamous few lines from the poet "McGonagall" who presumably stumbled upon the place in very inclement weather, "The Spittal of Glenshee, which is the most dismal to see, with its bleak rocky mountains .........and scarcely a tree", in actual fact it can be a little bleak but to those who love outdoor unspoilt landscapes the beauty is magnificent.

The geology of this are is testament to the power of Glacial action, with the glens being strewn with glacial debris. However there are also Neolithic remains in the form of a megalithic standing stone at the back of the KIrk. Nearby there is also a classic four poster stone circle know as the Grave of Diarmid. The mound that it stands on is not in fact a grave but common glacial debris.
